Our Client is a global leader in the nuclear power sector.

The Role

The Thermal Hydraulics Engineer will contribute modelling development, performance analysis and conceptualisation expertise to our Client’s portfolio of nuclear engineering and fuel manufacturing projects. They will have proven experience and knowledge in Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Nuclear Technology and Nuclear Safety and will join a busy department in a permanent staff basis at a time of exciting growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide analysis to support preliminary concept assessment, design, safety case justification and manufacturing support

  • Leading designs of thermal management systems and developing thermal modelling / calibration methodologies

  • Modelling and analysing thermal hydraulic systems for nuclear and fuel systems (cooling systems, reactor, heat transfer, heat exchangers etc)

  • Performing code validation and benchmarking studies

  • Executing technical studies and reporting on schedules whilst interacting with other scientific, engineering and safety departments

  • Supporting design activities via thermal hydraulic simulations in close collaboration with Mechanical Design, Codes and Methods and Safety/Licensing teams

  • Using thermal hydraulic computer and simulation codes for design and safety assessments (1D, CFD, RELAP5, severe accident etc)

  • Support the safety justification through analysis and quality assurance

  • Act as primary point of contact for validation cases of analytical methods

  • Create and provide regulator presentations and technical reviews to senior management.

  • Perform technical risk assessments and requirements management and integration for fluid and thermal systems

  • Drafting and reviewing project deliverables such as calculation notes, design specifications, and technical reports.

Key Requirements

  • Proven background in heat transfer, fluid mechanics and thermal hydraulics

  • Experience in conceptualising, modelling, and analysing thermal hydraulic systems

  • Proficient in performing engineering analysis, including thermal, fluid, stress, manufacturability, and cost analysis

  • Strong knowledge and experience of nuclear technology and nuclear safety

  • Proficient in the use of thermal hydraulic codes and tools (RELAP5, ATHLET, Thermal FEA)

  • Knowledge of simulation and engineering  tools and CFD codes (e.g MATLAB, MELCOR, SPECTRA, ANSYS, CAD, OpenFOAM etc)

  • Proficient in performing steady-state and transient modelling of cooling systems

  • Strong technical, commercial and project management competencies

  • BSc or MSc degree qualified in Engineering or equivalent (ideally )

  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional departments to define design requirements

  • Ability to provide technical feedback to design and manufacturing teams

  • Analytical and logical attitude with ability to work on studies simultaneously
