Our client, a prominent utilities & environmental services company within Greater London, seek a Design Manager to be based out of Slough, Berkshire.

Please note: The preferred candidate will be from a utilities, waste water (infrastructure) or main contractor background

This is a 100% full-time staff position. 

Purpose of the role: This Design Manager role will be responsible for providing primary design input to multiple data centre design and construction projects, including coordination with the Construction and Programme/Project Management and sitebased project, in-house management, commercial teams and external consultants / designers to facilitate the timely completion of design information to meet internal and external design programme targets and for managing the design process from start to finish.

Overseeing the design process using technical expertise and own and manage the BIM model on behalf of the business.

Key Responsibilities

General

(1) Creating the Design Brief – Technical ownership of and coordination of the design process and output, management of the design process using, where appropriate, consultants, sub-contractors, external planning and technical expertise

(2) Ensuring the design process takes account of current legislation, statutory requirements, standards and international codes of practice

(3) Managing the delivery of the overall project construction/design requirements during the construction phase

(4) Managing the development and implementation of design proposals ensuring they meet internal and external requirements, including taking account of budgetary constraints

(5) Liaising with the programme/project planner; leading the development and management of the design delivery schedules for each design discipline and coordinating these with procurement and construction programmes

(6) Liaising with the commercial team; lead the development and implementation of design proposals, data, bid deliverables and reports within both the constraints of the contract (inclusive of BIM requirements) and internal commercial objectives

(7) Management of any 3rd parties, sub-contractor CPD elements or novated design teams to ensure that they meet all specification, design interfaces are captured, and checking the competence andresources of any design teams or 3rd parties

(8) Providing advice and guidance on the ‘buildability’ of the design proposals to the design and construction teams

(9) identifying Design Risk and ensuring Design Risk Assessments are created and appropriately maintained for each project and that risks are managed and mitigated

(10) Carrying out drawing reviews and ensuring all appropriate comments/observations are added to the design

(11) Carrying out technical reviews to ensure contractual and technical compliance

(12) Coordinating the submission of information to satisfy Building Control compliance

Safety in design and construction

(1) Undertake the Principal Designer (CDM 2015) duties on behalf of the company

(2) Embrace the importance of Health & Safety in all circumstances and lead by example

(3) Assisting in the collation of the O&M Health and Safety file.

Efficiency in design

(1) Apply and reinforce standard designs and products across work programmes

(2) Rigorously challenge the teams to drive efficiency in our design programmes

Design Management

(1) Co-ordinate efficient outsourcing of workload

(2) Ensure technical deliverables are produced within the required timescales, costs are properly managed within the fee curves and change is tightly controlled and scope properly managed

(3) Be accountable for the quality of all design deliverables and technical delivery of least whole life cost solutions

Stakeholder Management

(1) Ensure relevant stakeholders are involved in design and the operational requirements are integrated into designs

Knowledge

➢ Significant previous experience in a similar role

➢ Degree, or equivalent, in an engineering or scientific discipline

➢ Chartered Engineer preferable

➢ Experience in managing a large design team, with the ability to steer them in new directions, motivate and inspire

➢ Aptitude for Building Information Modelling and the workflow associated with projects delivered in a Common Data Environment

➢ Well-versed in all aspects of Wastewater Infrastructure

➢ Understand the concepts of Whole Life Cost and be able to guide the team to a technical solution with the best value option

➢ Fully aware of the requirements of CDM

➢ Experience in using construction techniques and managing resource needs

➢ Experience in the detailed design of permanent and temporary works to deadline

➢ Knowledge and experience of CESWI and other related industry standards such as British Standards and Eurocodes

➢ Experience in 3D modelling design experience – such as AECOSim, Revit and Civil 3D

➢ Knowledge of BS1192 or ISO19650, Network Rail and Railway Group Standards

➢ Ability to challenge solutions and innovate to reduce embodied and operation carbon on projects

➢ Knowledge and experience in creating project programmes

➢ Proficient in using Microsoft Office software

➢ A confident demeanour and the ability to liaise with all levels of personnel

➢ Good communicator with the ability to communicate detailed data to a non-data literate audience
