Position: Assistant Technical Adviser – Environment and Sustainability

Overall Purpose of the Job:

The Assistant Technical Adviser assists the Technical Adviser – Environment and Sustainability to deliver the organisations work programme relating to the environment and sustainability.

Our Client has long held the position of developing safety standards across the offshore marine sector and is recognised as the industry standard setter in this regard.

The offshore industry is currently undergoing a huge transition in response to the multifaceted challenges of achieving Net Zero and with that, the improved stewardship of the marine environment, and embedding responsible resource use. Transition to a low carbon economy and the need for infrastructure to protect, restore marine environmental resources and benefit coastal communities means that companies in the sector will be active in trying to achieve global Blue Economy aims.

This role will enable the organisation to shape environmental best practices and standards for the offshore sector by harnessing the collective efforts of Members, building relationships with new sectors across the sustainability space, and fostering collaborations and activities contributing to environmental sustainability goals and targets as they continue to emerge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Technical Adviser to support the Environmental Sustainability Committee’s agenda, objectives, and internal processes.
  • Attend and contribute to committee(s) and workgroups, including preparing meetings minutes, and follow-up on actions.
  • Assist in the collection of information and feedback from members to facilitate development of guidelines.
  • Assist in the drafting of guidance documents and Information Notes.
  • Monitor regulatory and technical developments which may affect the company’s Members, briefing and lobbying as appropriate.
  • Assisting with preparing Environmental Sustainability presentations and training for their regional meetings.
  • Assisting with preparing Environmental Sustainability briefings for the senior management.
  • Consult and engage with the Secretariat and deliver in-house Environmental Sustainability awareness training.
  • Provide support to company Members on Environmental Sustainability inquiries.
  • Travel nationally and internationally, as required, to act as a company representative at appropriate meetings and events.
  • Work with the MSG team to maintain up-to-date committee member information.
  • Work with the communication team to develop the material, ensuring the effective outreach of the company’s work within the industry.

Experience, Qualifications, Qualities required:

  • Demonstrable understanding of the evolving sustainability regulatory landscape and knowledge of forthcoming regional and international legislative requirements.
  • A communicator and persuader to pragmatically coach offshore contractors of the need to raise their profile and credentials in marine environmental matters.
  • Experience in engaging at a senior level to liaise with member companies, solicit ideas and initiatives, and drive forward a programme of improvement for the wider company membership.
  • A champion for the elimination of single waste plastics offshore.
  • An advocate for the reduction of carbon emissions from the company membership fleet compared with the wider shipping industry.
  • Experience in the development, design, and implementation of new programs and initiatives.

Education and Knowledge:

  • Graduate in an environmental or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation.
  • A recognised qualification in Health and Safety matters is also desirable
